I started my workout today with Pilates class, the instructor was Mary. Mary made a point to welcome me to the class. I was the only new person today. I’ve never taken this class and have not done any research on what Pilates is, so I did not know what to expect. It was different then the Yoga class from yesterday, but with some similar moves like downward dog and of course some of the movements were harder then others for me. I realized how inflexible I am. It was not high paced and there is no jerky movements and everything was in 8 counts. Leg lifts, plank, back stretches, kickbacks and several other moves. Overall I enjoyed the class. After class, I went right into using 25 lb. dumbbells one arm dumbbell row each side, then arm dumbbell pullovers, incline double dumbbell rows, three sets of 10 each. Straight bar pull down wide arm grip and closed grip 3 sets of 10 with 90 lbs. Followed by 3 sets of 10 cable fly 30 lbs each arm. I quickly realize my left arm is not nearly as strong as my right arm. I had no problem doing this move with my right arm, but I really struggled with my left. I am going to have to work on this. I finished today’s workout with doing 2 miles on the elliptical. I like the elliptical machines, but after 2 miles my feet fall asleep so I need to figure out why this happens. I want to do a lot more cardio, but I need to clock in for work.
My workout today started with squats on the Paramount machine and 145lbs. I did 3 sets of 15 with just a short break in between sets. I did the same number of sets, the same weight, and same machine, but with calf raises. I love leg day. I moved to the inner thigh Strive machine where I did the same sets with 90 lbs. I continued the same weight and reps on the Strive outer thigh machine. Next, I went to the leg extension Strive machine were I stayed with the 90lbs, but only accomplished 3 sets of 10. I struggled a little on the leg extensions. I continued leg day with 2 minutes of squat jumps, 20 deep squats, 20 lunges each leg, 20 calf raises, and I finished my workout by taking the Yin Yoga class with Carin as my instructor. I had never taken a Yoga class before and was not sure what to expect. Everyone that knows me, knows that I tend to go full speed all the time and I do not still very long. It was really refreshing to stay in the Yoga posses for an extended amount of time allowing deep muscle stretches. I was surprising refreshing to take time to relax and stretch my muscles. Carin was extremely good at giving alternatives or modifications to moves if a new person like me was not comfortable doing some of the moves. I really loved the one of the hip and side stretches. I do not know what it was called, but it felt really great especially on leg day.
My activity level has went up and down over the past 45 years. I did fairly good at keeping my weight manageable until I turned 30, then it steadily increased until I hit a whopping 149.9lbs in January of 2016. I thought to myself that I had to do something, I was always tired and never seemed to feel good. Not to mention, that I did not like the way my body looked. I needed to make a change in my behavior towards my fitness and nutrition. I tried a couple different things in January, but nothing seemed to stick. On February 1, I started working at the YMCA as a Wellness Coach. I have found that I really love going to work at the Y. It is so great to have everyone that you talk to or see, want to be there. Everyone genuinely appreciates any assistance the staff at the Y gives to every guest. I was only there one week when some of the regular’s already knew my name and offered a greeting whenever they see me. I started working out with my son and taking courses through the Y for Wellness Coach and Group Exercise Instructor. At the end of March, I became a certified Group Exercise Instructor. I still have to take exercise classes and shadow other instructors before being able to instruct my own classes. I also started studying to become a personal trainer. I take the personal trainer certification exam the end of May. Oh and I am also training for a half marathon the first week of June. It is the beginning of April and I am just under 140 lbs and I feel better then I have in years. I feel stronger and I have a lot more energy. A person does not have to go to a gym or take a bunch of supplements to get fit, but each person needs to do what is right for them. If there is any way I can help you figure out what that is, I will be more then happy to sit down with you and try to help you attain your goals in a way that works for you!
